The historicity of numbers

Abstract

Through a peircean semiotics, this paper intend to analyze the numbers and its historicity. It is used the semiotic model proposed by Brian Rotman, numbers are thought as signs inside the mathematical discourse and the mathematical community. Considering the number as a sign, its meaning is constructed within the mathematical text where it is insert, and therefore it is socially build and historic.
